CURTAINS

The explosion created such a loud sound, it could be heard from miles away!

Flames rose high above the building creating intense heat, and clouds of dark smoke.

People ran from the building crying, screaming and fire engines began arriving to the scene.

Some of the firemen quickly pulled the hose from the fire truck and began spraying the flames while others ran toward the building to help people escape.

A young man ran toward the burning building, but he was stopped by one of the firemen. He tried to pull loose of the fireman’s grip, but to no avail.  He screamed a woman’s name and wept uncontrollably.

Firemen carried injured people out of the building and ambulances arrived to carry them to the hospital.

A woman stumbled out of the side of the building wearing what looked like a piece of curtain.

A fireman rushed toward her and caught her before she fell on the payment.

The young man recognized his wife.  She had burns on her hands and had difficulty breathing.

The fireman quickly placed an oxygen mask over her face and motioned for a stretcher.

She had soaked a curtain in water and placed it over her before running from the building and that kept her clothes from catching fire.

The young man rode with her to the hospital.

This week’s photo prompt is provided by Louise with The Storyteller’s Abode. Thank you Louise!

The Decision

“Thad, can’t you get transferred from the emergency room duty to another part of the hospital?”  Hannah asked.

“I’ve been thinking about that especially after such a relaxing week at the beach, but I’m not sure that’s what I really want to do.”

He looked out at the boats and saw a young child walking on one of them. The child leaned over the side of the boat, lost his footing and fell in the water.

Thad jumped up from the beach blanket and raced toward the water when he saw the child slip and fall in the water. He reached the child, pulled him to safety and his parents frantically reached for him.

The child had woken from a nap and slipped away without his parents knowledge.

After he returned and explained to Hannah what happened, he sat in silence for a few minutes, then said,” Hannah, I know, I do not want to move from the emergency room.”

THE TAYLOR PROJECT

FLASH FICTION FOR THE PURPOSEFUL PRACTITIONER- 2017

WEEK #21

Shovel

The Taylor Project

“Ralph, is the Taylor project almost finished?” his supervisor asked.

“No!  We have been working on it for a long time, but it seems like we are getting no where with it.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because the hole is not getting any deeper. “

“That’s impossible!”

“I know, but I have the depth checked every few days and it never seems to change.”

“Let me measure it and see what I come up with.”

“Sure, go ahead, but you will get the same answer I got.”

Jackson got to the site late in the afternoon after the crew had already left to go home. He stepped toward the hole and the ground shook, he heard a grumbling noise, the area felt cold and he was having trouble breathing. He thought he heard a strange voice warning him to go away and he rushed to get back to his car feeling weak and beads of sweat dripped from his head , his body shook, and he could barely get in his car.  As he drove away he thought he saw a huge black mass of clouds hovering over the construction site.

“What did you find out when you checked the site yesterday?” Ralph asked.

“Nothing, but I’ve decided to close the project and have everyone work on the Monroe project.”

WHO AM I

Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers

Week of 05-16 through 05-22-2017

his week’s photo prompt is provided by loniangraphics. Thank you for our photo prompt!

WHO AM I

I slowly opened my eyes, looked around and could see tubes leading from a hanging bag down to my arms.

A machine near my head broke the silence in the room every few seconds.

A woman dressed in white walked into the room and spoke to me.  She called me Anna.

I tried to think of my name, but nothing came to mind!  Could I be Anna?

A man walked in dressed in white also. He told me I had come in contact with an unusual plant, white, and very poisonous.

I learned that I was in a hospital, the woman in white was a nurse, and the man was a doctor.

The doctor told me my memory had been profoundly affected and there would be a lot of things I could not remember.

He did, however, assure me that within a few days, my memories would be restored.

A Simple Meal

A perfect place for the meeting.

A beautiful day, table set, atmosphere perfect, and privacy beyond measure.

He arrived on time ready to complete the transaction.

I watched as he gleefully placed the paper in front of me and handed me his pen.

I carefully moved it aside and asked that he please share one more meal with me.

He hesitated briefly, but graciously accepted my offer.

The meal was served and he ate in haste.

So sad, he rushed to end his life with just a simple meal.

STARTING POINT

“Jared, what are you thinking about?  You keep staring at that tree outside,” Matt said.

“I love looking at that tree because it reminds me of happier days.  Days when I was carefree, and living life with great expections for myself.”

“You can get the happy days back, Jared.”

“No, I’ll never get those days back.”

“You can have happy days like that again.  Just keep striving for better, and you will accomplish your goals.”

“My goal right now is to get out of this place and live a better life!”

“Yes, and now you must work toward that!”

“We can work on it together, Jared. I have the same goal and I think it’s time to sign up for those class’s that are being offered to us, ” Matt replied.

“I believe you are right, Matt! Let’s make it happen! We can talk to the warden today and start working toward our goal.”

CHICKEN

Katie heard Josh and Damon laughing about playing the chicken game.

“Josh, are you ready for the big day tomorrow?” Damon asked.

“Yes, my car is in great shape and hard to destroy and I heard yours is also.”

Katie screamed at them for being so childish for planning another year of putting their life in danger.

They just laughed at her and told her they would see her at the track in the morning.

Katie was so upset she didn’t sleep all night and raced to the track the next morning only to find out the race would be with small electric cars, not their real cars!

STARTLED

I had an appointment to see someone about renting an apartment.

I parked my car and began walking up the street.  The apartment was in a basement of the building and I proceeded down some steps to get to the door.

There were two apartments labeled A and B, but I was not sure which one I was to go to.

It was a cloudy day and the area was dark.  As I turned toward apartment A, there was a loud noise that sounded like a gun being fired.

It startled me and my stomach felt like it was turning somersaults!

I hurriedly hid behind a large flower-pot when I saw the door of apartment B opening.

A  tall guy with bushy hair stormed out and started toward the stairs until he saw me crouched behind the flower-pot.

He suddenly turned towards me with a gun pointed at me, then a woman bleeding from her side came out the same door and fired a gun at him.

He fell towards me with blood covering his face, and  I fell back against the wall.

The policemen arrived and I was detained until they made their investigation, then I slowly walked to my car in a daze.
